Driving Lessons Tailored to You
How do you find driving lessons that match your requirements? You should always wonder if the driving instructors are dedicated to improving themselves. Often this doesn’t neccesarily mean going with a big well known company as there are often smaller companies run by single individuals who truly enjoy what they do. You should find out what qualifications they hold and which driving instructor you will get.
Driving instructors who really care about driving will normally hold advanced driving qualifications and be committed to progressing with their own learning as much as yours.
A big company will present you with an overall smooth experience, and they work hard to improve that experience. However the personalised experience you get with a small company can often be worth it if you are willing to do your homework first and not just go with the cheapest price.
It is my opinion that the gender of your instructor is mostly inconsequential, and you can get all ranges of personalities in both. There are some who you may not get on with but there’s a lot more that you'll find to be laid back types who can crack (often terrible) jokes. I will however admit that science suggests that women are better able to understand the emotions of other people and this could have a positive effect in your driving experience.
Remember if you fail your manual test a few times, that all is not lost. There are quite a few people who sail through their automatic test even though they struggle in a manual car. Does this mean they are more unsafe overall? The insurance companies would disagree as people do not have to divulge why they chose to drive an automatic car.
Probably a good idea is to make use of any offers for cheap lessons a company makes and don’t lock yourself into any further lessons until you are back at home in a calm state of mind with which to evaluate if you are getting what you want out of the situation.
Overcoming the Fear of Driving on the Road
Are you the type of driver who gets nervous out on the road? Afraid that you don’t have the ability to handle dangerous scenarios that may arise. First thing to remember is that your driving instructor wouldn’t take you into a scenario where you are likely to cause danger. There are a very low number of accidents with learners especially when compared to the number of accidents after young drivers have aquired their license.
The most important thing to remember is you have full control of the car and choose the speed you are travelling at. If you sense there could be any type of hazard ahead of you then it’s always a good idea to slow down to a speed where you can react faster to whatever may occur. On country roads, turns can appear shallow when they are very sharp so it is always a good idea to take off speed if you can’t tell how sharp the corner really is.
One of the concerns is drivers behind you becoming agitated. The bottom line is some of these drivers are dangerous themselves, often you may find they have been involved in an accident or several that was their own fault in the past. Imagine how tractor drivers hold the traffic up and then be thankful you don’t have that job.
Obviously it can be difficult to overcome psychological constraints, and at some point you have to get out there and take little steps to get over the fear. These days it is much better because the driving instructor has access to a second set of controls that eliminates a lot of the risk.
